When ICANN was started, the Chairperson of ICANN claimed that a method
was needed to determine what “strings” people wanted.

At the time, it was pointed out that the DLDs people select in the .COM zone are a clear indication of extensions people prefer.

The DLDs are on the right and have the form -DLD.com and can easily be converted from .TLD formats.

When presented with the reality that people had been “voting” for years
with their DLD selections, the Chairperson of ICANN, Esther Dyson
simple re-stated her position…that there were no available lists of choices.

Your statement, “The first (as i know of) to use such an approach publicly on the internet.” sounds like ICANN-speak.
